Purpose of Study:

The National Curriculum is clear: reading is central to a high-quality education. Reading is the vehicle which enables pupils to both acquire knowledge and understanding as well as build upon what they already know. It is essential to the skills underpinning all aspects of communication, including spoken language and writing. Pupils can achieve cultural, emotional, intellectual, social and spiritual development through reading and it is important pupils establish an appreciation and love of reading across a wide range of genres as well as fiction and non-fiction. This breadth of exposure feeds children’s imaginations, allows them to step into other worlds and experiences, and opens up a treasure trove of wonder and joy for curious young minds.

Who is a Lexden Reader?

A Lexden Reader can decode a wide-range of texts, using phonological knowledge and decoding strategies to tackle difficult or new vocabulary. They show a passion for reading and engage in a wide variety of text types and genres which they can discuss confidently and with enthusiasm. When reading, a Lexden reader takes time to process and comprehend the texts they read by asking questions and engaging in discussion about what happens. They can retrieve answers and make sensible predictions by following the flow of the story. Lexden readers understand how to infer subtle details from texts by using clues left by an author and can explain characters’ actions and motives through deep understanding.

Key elements to our English Reading Curriculum:

  • A range of high-quality texts are used in lessons to widen children’s vocabulary and challenge their reading.
  • An extensive library offering a wide choice of genres for pupils to engage with and explore their love of reading from.
  • Regular reading opportunities with adults to ensure development of secure decoding skills and to allow high-level discussions.
  • Cross-curricular text choices are used in reading and general English lessons to build upon children’s knowledge.

Reading Spines

Each Year group Reading Spine consists of high quality texts that develop the children’s vocabulary. There are key texts that embody the school’s curriculum drivers and values of Community, Courage and Commitment; texts that celebrate the diversity in our school, promoting inclusion; a high quality poetry text and texts that the class teacher has chosen to share their pleasure for reading. This spine is reviewed annually to adapt to the community of the school and celebrate new books. These books represent the core reading experiences the children will have, they are supplemented with many other books and rhymes.

World Book Day 2023

We celebrated WBD 2023 by embracing our love of all things books! Children chose to dress up as their favourite characters, create potato or spoon character mascots and bring in their favourite books if they wanted.

Some of the older children took part in 'The Great Booky Footy Quiz' hosted by and quizzed by famous footballers. The younger children took part in shared reading with other classes and found inventive places to read in.

Classes carried out fun book-based activities and in the afternoon, house leaders led their houses (Collingwood, Trafalgar, Nelson and Ratcliffe) in an activity based on a well-loved children's picture book.
